When a potential match-up between Errol “The Truth” Spence Junior (24-0, 21 KO’s) versus Mikey Garcia (39-0, 30 KO’s) was presented to the public, it was initially received as a joke. No one took it serious, and no one thought Garcia stood a chance. Even his own family urged that Mikey put the idea of the fanciful fight out of his mind. Despite the tidal wave of advice warning Garcia to take a different path, his mind was made up. As a result of this determination, and continuously calling Errol out, Mikey has secured the bout that he wants.
As time has continued to pass, more and more individuals have begun taking stock in Garcia’s chances. There are now a slew of articles online speculating on how Mikey’s enviable boxing intelligence will ultimately lead him to a historically relevant victory. Even Garcia’s once skeptical brother and trainer, Robert Garcia, is fully on board.
“I believe I’m a better fighter overall. When it comes to footwork, I think I have the better footwork. When it comes to speed, I think I have better speed. When it comes to defense, I have better defense. With timing, I have better timing. All of these things are what will help me win this fight. The only thing that he has going for him that’s apparent is the size, height, weight and reach." ~Mikey Garcia, WBC Lightweight World Champion
Now, Robert believes that Mikey has what it takes to win in impressive fashion. Obviously, Mikey’s insistence that he was the superior athlete made a drastic impression on Robert. More than just Robert, the power of Mikey’s infectious suggestion has clearly permeated throughout large portions of the boxing world. Even the betting odds on the fight grow increasingly tight as the bout inches closer and closer.
According to Team Garcia, they are enjoying a splendidly transformative camp. Apparently, when preparing for fights Mikey is a long time consumer of SNAC products and supplements. Despite being a huge proponent of the brand, Mikey had never utilized the SNAC facilities in any noteworthy manner. That was until this particular training camp. For Errol, Mikey and his team decided that it’d be a prudent move to relocate their camp to the SNAC headquarters in San Carlos, California. According to Mikey, this the most revolutionary camp that he’s ever under gone.
Due to the fact that Garcia was moving up, he wanted to put on the new weight in the most scientific way possible. This was the true motivation for the camp relocation. Not only was the move to SNAC brand new, weight training in and of itself was something completely different to Garcia. The California native admits that prior to the Spence camp he never fooled with weights in preparation for a fight.
Between the numerous changes and the big, confident talk that has continuously poured out of Team Garcia’s mouths, now the bout is being thought of as more of a neck and neck affair. The one element of Mikey’s that is being praised above all else is his in ring boxing IQ. The most hardcore Garcia supporters are adamant that it’ll be Mikey’s savvy wit in the ring that will carry the day.
“I’ve always said I’m better than him. Not by a lot, but just enough to beat him. He also reminds me of myself in a lot of ways, the way he fights, the way he is. He does everything well, good footwork, good speed, controls the fight at his distance that he likes" ~Mikey Garcia, WBC Lightweight World Champion
While it is true that Mikey is a monstrously talented pugilist who does command a formidable in-ring boxing IQ, it would be a dire miscalculation to believe Mikey is heads and shoulders superior to Spence in this category. Errol also possesses impressive ring intelligence and a chillingly diverse arsenal of weapons. Along with his own fistic acumen, Errol enjoys a significant size advantage and spirit-withering power. Despite Team Garcia’s insurances that Mikey has seen a drastic improvement in his punching power, he is unlikely to stop or significantly slow down Spence.
It has frequently been pointed out that in his last couple of fights against: Robert Easter, Sergey Lipinets and Andrien Broner, Garica was unable to stop any of them. All of these bouts were at lower weight classes. Scores of neutral fans and Spence supporters alike take this as irrefutable evidence that Mikey cannot hurt Errol. If that proves to be true, Mikey is in for one abusive night.
At this point, only time will tell how this intriguing battle of elite talents plays out.
As the old saying goes, "be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it!"
Stay tuned to see the thrilling conclusion.
“This is definitely one of those crossover fights for me. Garcia is the biggest name to date that I’m fighting on American soil. It’s just great being so young in my career, fighting in my first pay-per-view and fighting with a guy like Garcia who brings over a different fanbase. You can tell how I looked ten weeks ago compared to how I look now. I’m not overlooking Garcia. I’m in tip-top shape, slim and ready." ~Errol "The Truth" Spence Junior, IBF Welterweight World Champion
